Bugs on Rugs: How to Play

Nobody wants to have bugs on their rugs, that is, of course, unless you’re playing this adorable set collection game in which players are tasked with collecting different kinds of bugs!

It’s the perfect day to do some serious bug collecting! In Bug on Rugs players take turns grabbing bugs from the floor and the last one left will fly to the wall and perform a special power!

Each bug scores in different ways to make sure you gather the cleverest collection of critters by the time the game ends!

To set up the game, shuffle the bug deck face down without the end card and then add the end card to the deck depending on the number of players!

For two players make 3 even piles and stack them with the end beneath the TOP pile face down.

For 3 players make 2 even piles and stack them with the end between them face down.

For 4 players make 3 even piles and stack them with the end above the BOTTOM pile face down.

For 5 players make 4 even piles and stack them with the end above the BOTTOM pile face down.

Deal each player one bug to start their hand. Players keep their hands secret from the other players!

Then reveal 1 bug from the deck face up beside it to start the WALL!

Choose a starting player and give them the start marker, then begin the game!

The starting player deals 2 bugs per player plus one extra face up onto the middle of “the floor”, which is probably just a table, but you can play on the floor if you want to!

The starting player picks 1 bug from the floor and adds it to their hand and then players take turns going clockwise. Then everyone goes it again! There will be 1 bug left over and it moves to the wall!

Then perform the wall power on the bottom of that card unless it was the final round.

If it was the final round then pass the starting player marker and begin a new round!

When the end card is reached it means the upcoming round of choosing is the final round!

The bugs each score different so it’s important to know how they score before starting the game that way you are prepared!

Butterflies score 1 point for every bug type that the players have exactly 1 of.

Fireflies score 1 point for each different color rug you have across all of your cards.  (Mosquitos do not count as having rugs even when acting as another bug)

Larva score 3 points by discarding 1 mosquito to hatch it. Unhatched Larva score zero points.

Ants score 5 points per ant but only if you have the most ants. If you have the 2nd most ants you score 3 for each ant, otherwise you score 1 per ant. (Not to be confused with your Aunt - Poof in Hailey’s Aunt)

Spiders score 7 points by discarding one fly to feed it.

Each leftover fly that wasn’t fed to a spider scores 2 points.

If you have an even number of beetles each one is worth 5 points, if you have an odd number each one is worth 2 points!

If you have exactly 4 lady bugs they are worth 25 points but if you have any other number they are worth 1 point each.

Mosquitos don’t score normally. When you are grouping mugs you may treat each pair of mosquitos as 1 of any other bug that you already hold. Un-paired mosquitos score nothing.

When everyone is ready players reveal their groups by laying all of their cards face up and scoring each bug types unique scoring method using the score sheet! You must score the bug types from top to bottom in order on the score sheet and the highest score wins!

And of course keep in mind that each bug has a special power but you’ll be able to read those on each card as you play the game. Thanks so much for watching and please tell us in the comments below what kind of bug is your favorite! Be Bold, Play Games, Be You! Happy Gaming!
