Furry Foodies: How to Play
In Furry Foodies you are a hungry cat sneaking snacks while the humans in your house aren’t looking. With a little cunning and the bat of your paw, you’ll push plates out of the grid to collect them but beware of those broken plates! You don’t want the humans to catch on!
The objective of the game is to collect sets or sequences of a variety of food in order to score points.
To set up the game you’ll mix up the 88 single-sided tiles and stack them in face-down piles. Then use 25 of them to create a 5 by 5 face up tile grid with a small amount of space in between each tile. Let each player pick their favorite cat and put it into their base! Then give each player a reference card displaying the scoring chart so they can reference it throughout the game.
The player who most recently pet a cat goes first, and this time I’m not even lying, this is in the rulebook! Cats enter the grid from anywhere outside of the 5x5 grid area and they move inward 1 tile at a time. As they move they push a single line of tiles and when they push a tile past the edge of the 5x5 grid, they collect it. This is giving me flashbacks…
Cats are stealthy and move exactly 2 squares per turn. They cannot voluntarily leave the board, push other cats or shove tiles toward a rival cat but they can move in any direction except the square they just came from. They need to plan ahead in order to avoid getting tiles they don’t want because if a cat has a valid move, they MUST take it.
The numbers on each tile indicate their rank, not their value. Scores are determined at the end of the game by the size of a players collected groups and sets and sequences so all tiles collected are placed face up in front of the player and are visible to all other players. This is important because if you’re coming up on a set of broken plates, you may want to head the other way!
Occasionally a cat will find itself in a pinch where it can not move any further. At this point it will leap back to the side of the board for one move! This can be done from anywhere on the board but only if it’s the last resort for that kitty!
When this does happen it leaps off the board and any tiles missing on the board are immediately replaced. If the cat still has move to take it does so from outside of the 5x5 tile grid as though it was taking its first turn! Otherwise, it remains off the board until it’s turn comes around again.
The special tiles on the board need to be known before playing the game though. Broken plates attract the sounds of humans! They’re counted as their own set and are subtracted from the players total score. If you have one broken plate you only lose one point but if you have two you lose 3 points, if have three broken plates the player loses 7 points. This continues all the way up to 10 which would lose the player 70 points. That would be a pretty mischievous cat.
When a cat nip is collected it’s placed in front of the player and can be used any time on the players turn or on their opponents turns for good or evil! This allows the players to entice any cat to move an extra square on their turn!
There’s also the Cat Sak which has a delicious unknown treat inside. It counts as a wild snack for scoring purposes.
The game ends immediately if at any time a player need to place a tile but there are no tiles in the draw pile. The player can place the last tile and next player gets one final turn and the game ends!
At this time the cats prepare to dine on their favorite dishes and they score them! Tiles are scored in sets and sequences.
A set is 1 or more tiles of the same number.
A sequence is 2 or more tiles in numerical order.
Sets and sequences score the same way, using this handy chart! In most cases the player will want to score the single largest set or sequence they can use first and then use the left overs to create combinations of decreasing sizes until they only have individual plates left.
The players total score is the number of points they scored minus the broken plates they have which are scored using the same table the players used for sets and sequences.
And that’s how you play Furry Foodies. Thank you so much for watching and please tell us in the comments below what your favorite snack is! Be bold, play games, be you! Happy gaming!
